ORPHANAGES, DAYCARE CENTERS and RESIDENCES
FOR ABANDONED, SICK and ABUSED CHILDREN :
In Ecuador, like any other South American Country there are
a lot of children without homes, parents, family, friends,
living just with a father or a mother who doesn´t have a job
or any income. Many of them are alcoholics, drug users or
are in jail.
These parents send their kids to the streets to beg for money,
sell lottery tickets and candy even stead in order to get
money for drugs or alcohol. These kids have no education because
they don´t have time or money to go the school. But there
are a lot of orphanages and non-profit organizations that
have a roof, food, clothing and education for these children
for free.
The people in charge of these centers have so much to do!!
They specially need help with what the kids really need, that
is: a smile, a hug, help with their homeworks, play with them,
etc. you will see how happy they get with these demostrations
of love, and your soul will really feels great.
Placements are arranged in advance.
TEACHING
Teaching English is one of the most needed vounteer jobs worlwide
because English is the first language. It´s guaranteed for
Spanish speakers that they will have better jobs and more
possibilities for success in their lives if they speak English.
So, when you teach English in any place in Ecuador, you will
really enjoy it because they really appreciate your effort.
You will be teaching in:
* Pre-school for impoverished children
* Schools
* Public High Schools
* Orphanages
* Daycare Centers
* Tourists Guides, Navy and Police on Galapagos,
You can bring any materials to help children play and learn.
Service placements are arranged in advance; they are based
upon your interests, experience, language, skills, and the
communities needs.
COMMUNITY SERVICES
The needs of the communities are the same as that of any other
country in South America. The basic needs will be education,
health and food. In order to provide those things, classrooms,
medical centers, and roads are needed.
YOUTHFUL
ORIENTATION CENTER
This is a minimum security youth correctional facility for
boys aged 12-18, located in North Quito. The young men spend
their time--ranging from a few months to a maximum of four
years--in various vocational shops, academic classes, and
playing sports in the enclosed courtyards.
This youth correctional facility encourages the youth to develop
responsible social skills, academic competence and practical
work experience. With a staff of approximately 35 individuals,
the priests, psychologists, teachers and security guards offer
a comprehensive approach to social development and personal
pride.
If you feel that you can help these young people, this is
your place.
BUILDING
Ecuador is a country in need of much help wichc makes social
works possible in communities everywhere. Needed services
include:
Additional classrooms in schools with overcrowding
Homes for old and young people
L ocal and ecological routes
Reforestations,
All these projects are designed by periods with low costs
shared by a team of two or more volunteers who can build by
themselves. This will be a rich experience because the volunteers
will participate in all the steps, starting with the purchase
of the materials and working together with community neighbors
and Authorities.
CONSERVATION
EVEcuador
works with one of the most big organization of indian communities
who is dedicated to the conservation, ecological management,
health research and community development in all regions of
Ecuador.
These confederation was born 36 years ago and it is dedicated
to the organizative process.
This organization has departments which specialize in reforestation
initiatives, agricultural ecology, developed through the collaboration
of biologists, local farmers, and authorities.
You can also work in these departments: laws, comunication,
leadership training, education, computing, and a lot more
on the 18 provinces of the 22 there are located on the regions
coast, andes and amazonas, reforestation
projects, environmental education programs, developing and
developing organic and sustainable farming practices.
In addition, this indian organization built several
rural schools and has a headquarter base in the middle of
the Amazonas and they work for all the communities who are
affected by the oilshed of the big international petroleum
companies.
Also they promove with the Ecuadorian Congress new laws to
help their communities, through educational
programs such as nutritional training, environmental education,
agroforestry, health programs, and handicraft production.
On the dry forest you can help developing and carry out conservation
initiatives.
The Quicha communities have handicrafts
stores in Quito and all around indian market places in Ecuador.
Galapagos Islands, 1000 km off the west coast of Ecuador,
where the unique wildlife inspired Charles Darwin's to write
his bestseller book.
You will stay at a biological research station dedicated to
replanting the Isabela highlands with native plant species
that have become rare as introduced exotics have started to
take over the islands.
ANIMAL RESCUE
In Ecuador,like any part of
South America, the illegal trafficking of wild animals is
a billion-dollar business.
Thousands
of primates, birds, and reptiles are captured and smuggled
to North America and Europe for sale as pets.
The Ecuadorian government makes every attempt to curtail this
trade, making numerous raids and arrests, and confiscating
animals. After being confiscated, the animals must go to a
rescue center for rehabilitation and reintroduction into their
natural habitats.
We work with a rescue center outside Quito and the Amazon
Rainforest that accepts animals confiscated by the Ministry
of the Environment and local police, the center houses around
50 animals. Typical animals include Andean spectacled bears,
pumas, ocelots, jaguars, giant Galapagos Tortoises, kinkajous,
porcupines, coatis, capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, wooly
monkeys, boa constrictors, parrots, Andean eagles, hawks,
wild ducks, and deer. Since the goal of the center is to rehabilitate
the animals as quickly as possible, there is a constant flow
of animals coming into and leaving the center.
Usually about 75% of the animals can be rehabilitated completely
and set free. The remaining animals must stay at the center
and are placed in the least restrictive environment possible.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to contribute to the
rehabilitation program. They are responsible for feeding,
cleaning and repairing enclosures, helping to build new enclosures,
and improving existing facilities to provide a more natural
environment for the animals.
